Alright...

1. Lauren. Xallanthia online.

2. Books: Temeraire and A Song of Ice and Fire, insofar as reading the authors' LJs constitutes "following" a fandom; and Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series (Master & Commander) through one small community on a bigger site. As for participation, Farscape is it, but even that isn't much, anymore, though of course I read Scapers' LJs and occasionally check in at TF. Haven't got my hands on the Farscape comics yet so there hasn't been much for me to follow... I'm not a huge one for vids and fic so that alone won't keep me.

3. I first registered on the DOM (old SciFi Farscape board) in 2002. That was the start of my internet presence/interest, and how I learned that fandom even existed.

4. My dad watched Farscape and introduced me. I stayed for the whole story, but I'm also a shipper (especially J/A). After the cancellation, it was the community that kept me involved with the show and the fandom. (For the book series: I picked ASOIF off the shelf, saw the M&C movie, and heard about Temeraire through Entertainment Weekly).

5. I have written a grand total of 4 fics, and made 1 vid, all for Farscape. Oh, and one Horatio Hornblower/Aubrey&Maturin crossover/filler fic.

6. I had just started dipping my toes into Farscape fandom when the cancellation was announced. When I read the transcript of the chat, I was very moved that the producers, writers, and actors had that kind of relationship with their fans.

7. I met one of my best friends through Farscape. A few weeks into university, and again, right after the cancellation, I mentioned Farscape to a co-worker. He mentioned that his hallmates were watching FS that night in someone's room, because one of them had the first season DVD box set. Well, I just HAD to meet this guy, so after work I went back with Co-worker and he dropped me off. The DVD owner and I talked all night! We have a lot more in common than just Farscape and now, almost 7 years later, he's still one of my best friends.

Second most awesome thing: cooking a 4-course meal out of the Aubrey/Maturin cookbook. Yum!

8. Other than the friend from 7, the only fans I know are online or people I introduced to the show. One thing I've always remarked about Scapers is how much they care about others in their community. Kansas and TF are also the only boards I've ever been on that had both no forbidden topics and very little/no flaming, which is amazing! I also have made some very good online friends who I have kept up with for a long time now and will most likely continue to keep up with.

9. Nowadays, it doesn't mean much, except that with certain people I can say, "Yes, I was there when..." and the friendships I did build in the community. However, when I was in college, it meant much more because I was also somewhat known on campus as "The Farscape Girl" and introduced many people to the show, meeting many interesting people in the process in addition to the close friend I already mentioned. I was even able to welcome a younger scaper to my college campus! Additionally, the Save Farscape campaign began when I was at the height of loneliness at school, not having any real friendships left. Being part of the community and the campaign, even just minimally, helped me feel like I was part of something that mattered, and fostered relationships where none had been before.

Thank you hun! I know exactly what you mean in 9, the Save Farscape campaign definitely made me feel involved more than I had previously.

hugs

): I wish I could be more helpful, but I am not really into sci-fi fandoms. TEARS.

as i am bored and in a meme answering mood.

1. Rebecca ..Bec, becky, bex , becca pick your variation . Online Door1984 or variations of this
2.these days BSG is about it , in the past there was Farscape , there have been other shows/movies but i havent really gotten involved fandom wise in these.
3. Back when TUFs started , i cant actually recall when that was a long time ago! on the scifi official board and all...
4.Characters , i i fall for a character i will watch anything and follow it to the end
5. i have made a few icons in my time that is about it lol
6. TUFS! and the farscape scifi board , i don't think you could have a better start than TUFs
7. I got to meet my FTT! and the rest of the TUFs really some of the most wonderful people ever, there were so many crazy fun times with this lot!
8. ugh there is a reason i do try to stay far away from fandom these days, people are to serious, the thing i always loved about TUFs was that we were some of the youngest people around in farscape fandom yet there was a huge amount of respect and love between everyone (and of course the uber crazyness)
9.eye patches! lmao, to be honest being a fan these days means just being crazy with my FTT. I am a fan of things still but sadly as i get older don't have the time to input on online fandom really. It will probably mean less as i continue to get older but at least i gained a few lovely friends whilst i was in uber fan mode.

1- Alayne (SETI_fan)

2- Farscape, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Stargate Atlantis. I like a lot of other shows, but don't really participate in the communities for them. I chat about Battlestar Galactica with a few friends, but don't follow the news on the boards or websites.

3- Since I was about 16, so 8 years now? I've been a Star Wars fan since I was 12, buying the books, toys, etc., but I wasn't part of a community then.

4- I find shows in different ways. Either I stumble across them on TV or friends recommend them. If it's sci-fi, I'll usually tune in and give it a shot. What keeps me there is interesting, funny, and/or powerful story-telling, and characters that I connect with and bond to (who can keep me a fan even if the show around them sucks).

5- I'm a fanfic writer and have briefly dabbled in drawing and wallpaper-making, and I would vid if I had the time and talent (I definitely have the ideas!). But writing is by far my main talent I can offer.

6- My very first fandom experience was probably while travelling when I was a kid (12? Maybe younger). We'd stopped at a hotel and I saw the season finale of the Nickelodeon sci-fi show "Space Cases". We went down to the pool and I met another girl there who watched the show too. We instantly started chatting about how much we liked it and the plot twists that had happened, and it was the fastest I'd ever gotten to know someone, especially not being very social as a kid.

7- Hard to pick one experience. They all revolve around the sense of community and friendship. Partying with a hotel full of nerds in Dallas last summer was great (especially since we were hanging out with actors). Ranting/raving over season finales or emotional episodes and plot developments are fun. And being part of a conversation with a bunch of other fans on a messageboard that ranges into the philosophical, while still occasionally lapsing into dirty jokes is a great experience.

8- Um...same as 7? Again, fandom to me means community. It's a social thing. The best friends I've ever had I made through fandoms, and with the aid of the Internet, I've been able to find kindred spirits not only in other states, but in other countries. I've chatted about shows by IM at late hours of the night because it's day in Australia. I've danced and hung out with fans at conventions. I've engaged in passionate conversations with my officemates at school when we all should be working. It's all about fun, friendship, and inspiring good, deep conversations.

9- Being a fan, to me, means loving a show (or book series, movie, etc.) to the point that you think about it at other times of day and wanting to share it with other people. It's about being part of a community and having an instant bond with anyone else who is into that show/book/movie. It's kind of like being in a secret club, especially if it's a less-known fandom. Fans watch out for each other, hang out together, and help each other out when needed, asking only that the other person pass it on and do what's in their power to help the next person who needs it. It's not all perfection. Some fans get obsessive or overly defensive of their favorite character/show/etc., but conflicts occur anytime people get together, and they are definitely fewer in my fandoms than my real life. Overall, fans are a generous, friendly, funny, and intelligent people who I'm honored to know.

Hope that helps you, Drex! What's this for anyway?

TUF! I forgot to mention the fun we had with TUF in particular! The insane cow army stuff, the documentaries, the mutant animals... I think we could add that to the list: being a fan also involves having a wacky sense of humor and when you're with fans, you can be goofy and celebrate your fandom without fear of being teased, mocked, or looked down upon. Very welcoming and open-minded people, fans.

Thank you so much! You are a star! And if you can get anybody else to fill it out that would be super hun

It's for xakliaaeryn's college project about community theatre. This is research (which is one of my strengths hence I'm getting heavily involved) and it all revolves around fandom community. So these responses are key to whatever we out together.

Hugs

Cool! Kind of glad the word "community" came up so much in mine then. ;) I'll spread the word and try posting it around on my LJ if you want. Might get a few bites from different people.

Liz: hmd: i've been alienating people[info]thecrazykind on March 12th, 2009 06:25 pm (UTC)
1. Sarah or Liz (thecrazykind online)

2. Farscape, Supernatural (though from a safe distance), BSG, Merlin

3. Around ten years

4. Well, I remember my mom and me seeing the previews for it on SciFi and saying it looked good. We watched the Premiere and must have watched it off and on again after that because I remember watching A Human Reaction with her as well. It wasn't until the second season when I caught the end of Out of Their Minds one night that I became really interested again. The Look At the Princess trilogy hooked me for good and from then on it became my #1, can not miss show. Truthfully, I still consider it my favorite show of all time. There are so many wonderful memories connected with it not only including fandom but also family and friends. And the show was so imaginative, the writing and acting phenomenal. There's no show like it.

5. Only if you consider sewing dolls made out of felt resembling characters from shows and such a skill.

6. First experience would probably be with Farscape on the old scifi bboards. I never really posted much back then. Mostly just lurked but I read a lot of the posts and I would always go there after an episode to read other people's reaction. Then by chance I had emailed this scaper just to let her know how much I loved her fic I had read on one of the fansites and in one of her emails she said I had to go join up at the Kansas bboard. That led to me joining up with TUF and I started becoming much more involved.

7. TUF. For one, I met my FTT through TUF and she really is just an amazing person who has been wonderful to have in my little fangirl life. And then all the rest of the TUFs...they are such a wonderful group of people. When we were a more active group it really gave me kind of safe haven. I could forget real life worries and just be silly with these other people, all united by this common interest. It definitely provided me with a lot of fun, a lot of laughs, and a whole network of support I didn't even know was possible online.

8. Aside from TUF, all my experiences have been great. Everyone has always been so friendly on the boards. I always loved going to Kansas and then Terra Firma after Kansas shut down. They were the friendliest boards I have ever been too. Most other fandoms are really plagued by constant conflict and I never really saw that in the Farscape fandom.

9. Being a fan means you're allowed to be a bit nutty sometimes. Definitely allowed to have silly fun. Really it's just loving something and allowing it to take you away from real life worries for a bit. And if you're able to find other people to share that love with, it's absolutely fantastic. Now that I'm older, I don't have the time really to spend immersed in fandom. Mostly I just lurk around boards, read fanfic from time to time, look at picspams, and such. I guess now I'm just more of a part-time fan. I fangirl when I can. :)

Thank you hun - and I totally see your dolls as a skill! One I wish I had!

lol love it! go you guys :-)

p.s. I meant to say in my post but we are also looking for pics, videos etc anything that remind people about fandom and community. Could we use some of your pictures of your dolls? If so could you link to some of your faves? If not don't worry it was just a thought
Liz: gg: you look beautiful.[info]thecrazykind on March 12th, 2009 07:11 pm (UTC)
Oh no, that will be fine. Wonderful to spread the felty insanity. lol I'll look around and find some of my faves today and get back to you. ;)
